'PEGGERS HEADED TO LLOYD
Winnipeg is known for breeding mosquitoes and musicians.
The city has been buzzing recently over the quartet, Kakagi, that was voted Winnipeg’s favourite new band this year by a Manitoba publication.
The band is hoping their reputation goes viral during their upcoming spring tour.
The Canadian folk rock band will kick off their first foray outside of Winnipeg with an eight stop tour that will bring them to The Root in Lloydminster on May 4.
“Basically, the goal of this tour is get our feet in the door in all these new markets and try to get some CDs in people’s hands,” said songwriter and lead vocalist, Jacob Brodovsky.
Brodovsky admitted he knows very little about the Border City “other than the booker at The Root is very kind,” as his first impression.
He has heard good things about us from the musical grapevine though and repeated them for our sake.
“It’s a tight community and word travels fast, but Lloydminster is always a good gig and that The Root takes good care of people,”  said Brodovsky.
Kakagi was formed in late 2015 by he and his brother Max, the drummer and their lifelong friends Jesse Popeski on vocals and guitar, and Jonathan Corobow, the bass player.
“It fell together pretty quickly which is kind of nice; it allowed us to hit the ground running,” said Brodovsky.
The quartet will be at The Root in support of their 2016 debut EP “Kakagi.”
The EP and the band are pronounced Ke-Ka-Gi named after a lake in the Lake of the Woods in northwestern Ontario where Brodovsky is an assistant wilderness camp director.
He will reopen the came after Kakagi wraps up their spring tour with a performance in Winnipeg on May 11.
Brodovsky assured the Source they won’t be playing any camp fires songs at The Root.
“We do pretty high energy folk rock shown so think sort of Neil Young,” he said noting they have also been compared to the Weakerthans.
“We’re pretty influenced by a lot of other Canadian songwriters.”
Kakagi will share time on The Root stage with an opening act by Sam Weber, a singer/songwriter and a roots rock band from Victoria, British Columbia.
The Kakagi EP has just three songs on it “to get something out as fast as possible” according to Brodovsky.
“We’ve got three songs; we recorded them over two days, everything live off the floor.”
They’ve got studio time booked for the fall with eight or nine tunes of new material to record.
“Ideally we’d like to come to Lloydminster and all these places next fall and again next spring with a new release,” said Brodovsky.
In addition to the tour announcement, the band is premiering a new live video for their song, “The Inbetweener,” filmed at a local Winnipeg glass artist’s home studio.
“It’s basically a song about being a by-stander to infidelity” said Brodovsky.
They also have a video called “Spadina Streetcar” filmed in reference to Brodovsky’s years living in Toronto before he and his brother moved back home.
He said the music scene there is very competitive in Toronto where there’s a lot more money to be made, but a lot more people trying to make it too.
He said Winnipeg is really nice by comparison.
“Most people just do it to do it and not doing it necessarily for fame or to make a living, so the community is a lot more collaborative and people share a lot more.
“I think that results in better music.”
With so many musicians coming our way from Winnipeg, it was natural to ask Brodovsky what’s in their water beside mosquito larvae.
“It’s a long winter; we got a lot of time to sit around and play guitar when it’s too cold to go outside,” he said.
The ultimate goal of Kakagi is to become a full time career band.
“We’re giving ourselves some time before we get there, so basically, Max and Jonathan who play bass and the drums, they are both still in university,” said Brodovsky.
“So we’ve got a year and a half before they are done and we can start to do this full time.”
